Running. Scientifically, it is a great way to increase cardiovascular endurance. For many, however, it's something that feels more like a task, than something enjoyable. Could it be the heavy breathing? Or is it how every step you take makes you question if your knee will hang in there? The possible reasons why someone may dislike running are almost infinite. Luckily, for the anti-runners of the world, there are alternatives to improving your cardiovascular endurance, without one fast-paced step required. How could it be? I've curated a list for you of the top ten ways to make cardio way more fun.
10. Cardio Machines
Forget the treadmill, if you are a gym-goer, there's a wonderful array at most gyms of other cardio-intense machines. Examples include ellipticals, rowers, and stair steppers. These machines provide plenty of variety that all have numerous benefits, and is a great way to do cardio without even going near the treadmill.
If you're a fan of loud music and vibrant lights, this option is great for you. Follow the lead of a certified instructor as they show you the way through numerous varieties of cardio, all while dancing to music on a stationary bike. Although these classes are usually held in groups, they feel deeply personal, like its just you and the bike.
8. CrossFit
If you are into high intensity workouts and weightlifting, but hate the idea of running, CrossFit may be a great option for you. Now, running is definitely incorporated into CrossFit, but it is usually strung together with numerous other weightlifting and gymnastics movements, that makes it feel like you're not just running. Every day the workout is different, so this is a great option for those who love change and variety. You can also guarantee every workout will get your heart rate moving, regardless if there is running in the workout that day or not.
7. Jump Rope
This is a simple, inexpensive and quick way to get your heart rate up, without having to travel any distance at all. With the simple swing of a rope and a hop of your legs, you can get your heart rate up just like while running. This is something that requires little space, and little cost. The technique and focus required, allows a distraction of your mind of the intense work you are doing.
6. Zumba
For those who can spend hours on the dance floor, but dread running, I introduce you to Zumba. Dancing is a great way to get your body moving and work muscles you may not usually use. Zumba is great, because you follow the lead of an instructor who takes you step by step of dance moves, through a set playlist of songs.
5. Walking
If you don't want to run, why not walk!? Walking has been proven to show many benefits, and is a great, low impact way to get your body moving. It raises your heart rate, so increasing how much you walk no doubt increases your cardiovascular health with consistency.
4. Swimming
So, maybe treadmills and trails just aren't your thing. But any time someone invites you to a pool party, you're the first one there. Swimming is a great way to increase your cardiovascular fitness, in a much different format than running. If you are a strong swimmer, or just find a lot of joy in doing it, this may be the perfect alternative for you.
3. Bicycling
Love going outside on trails for scenery and some alone time, but don't like to run? This option is an awesome way to get your heart rate up while still spending time outside. This is also a great way to meet new people, because group rides are a wonderful option. You can be a part of a community that motivates and pushes each other.
2. Hiking
Maybe rocky terrain and beautiful scenic views are more your style. If so, hiking may become your new cardio workout of choice. From weighted cardio and hot yoga that are sure to raise that heart rate, to a more stretch and meditation focus, there really is a yoga class out there for everyone.
